room reveal: farmhouse playroom

4/7/2018

When we moved into the farmhouse, the upstairs consisted of one bedroom and an open loft area.

The whole upstairs is in a plus-sign shape, so there was the potential for three smaller "rooms".

We needed one more bedroom to give the girls each their own rooms, so we will finally build a wall in the next few weeks to give Harlee some privacy. We also added a bathroom, so the girls could have their own bathroom up there.

The leftover loft space became our farmhouse playroom.
Before we moved in, the upstairs was brown paneling.

We thought about putting up drywall, but the more I thought about it, it was just an extra unnecessary expense.

So we decided to paint instead.

As I talked about in a previous post, we chose "Warm Oatmeal" for the color.  It's a creamy tone that's pretty close to white, without being white.

It turned out exactly how I pictured.

I love the contrast between the walls and the original wood trim.

I love that there is still great natural light.

I love that the space will now be a fully functional and organized playroom!

And now....the moment you've all been waiting for...the Room Reveal for our Farmhouse Playroom.

To be quite honest, this room has already evolved a bit since we moved in last July.

We had originally planned to have the Barbies and doll clothes housed upstairs, but with the older two girls having bedrooms up there and our three-year-old downstairs, that setup just didn't make sense anymore.

So we moved the Barbie house downstairs to Mattie's bedroom and made the playroom a little more functional for the preteens.
We knew we wanted to have a designated homework area for the girls that was away from the distractions of the main floor of the house.

My mom bought these two little antique school desks at an auction for a few bucks several years ago and they fit perfectly between these bookcases and light fixture that came with the bed set we bought secondhand when we first got married.

The bed had definitely seen better days, but the shelves were in good shape and we were pleasantly surprised to see how amazingly the desks fit in-between them!

All the furniture you see here were items we already had.

The only new purchases were my Pioneer Woman map (still my absolute favorite purchase from our trip back in the summer) and the two scripture references on either side of the map.

I'm hoping to implement some sort of a letter-writing system between the three girls and plan to use the little cubbies in the middle of the desks to be their mailboxes.

Below the windows (the beautiful NEW windows!) is a cool old buffet my parents' had at the house.  The legs were cut off and it's now a nice bench for the girls to sit on.

I bought the indoor-outdoor rug from WalMart on clearance last fall for our living room.  It never really "fit" there, so I decided to try it upstairs.  PERFECT!  The curtains were made by a good friend and bring the whole space together!

We had the cubbies on the west wall at the old house.  They could probably be more organized at this moment, but at the ages the girls are, there are just some things that they need every once in a while that don't have a home.

Hopefully this summer, we'll have some time to sit down and go through the cubbies to purge and make sure they're not bulging quite as badly as they are now...but for now, it's hidden, so I'm okay with that.

The conglomeration of wall art is made up of various prints from Hobby Lobby, Mardel, Target, and thrift stores.

When I saw the Scentsy warmer on a friend's Facebook garage sale, I knew I had to have it for this room.  WalMart lamps and an adorable globe from WalMart finish off the look.

The humidifier gives it a nice look too, don't you think?  😉

For nine years at the old house, we tried to carve out a place for the girls to relax that was "their own".

First, we had a nursery in one bedroom and a playroom in the other.

When we brought Baby #2 home, the playroom got changed into a "big girl bedroom" for Baby #1 and the toys stayed in there.

We put the girls together eventually and moved the playroom to where the nursery had originally been.

When Baby #3 came home, the playroom became a nursery/playroom combo.

Before we moved out here to the farmhouse, we even tried to put all three girls in one room to sleep and have the toys and desks in the other.

It just never worked out quite like we had pictured.

Until now.

The farmhouse playroom is all I had ever hoped for.

It sits opposite the new bathroom, with the older girls' bedrooms on either side.

When Harlee's wall is complete and the new bathroom has a door, I will do a walk-through of the whole upstairs.

Can't wait to share it with you SOON!

Happy Sunny Saturday from the Farmhouse, friends!

amazon finds for the farmhouse.

I really love Amazon.

We have had a Prime account for several years and use it for everything from coffee to toilet paper, books to home decor, music to movies.

Some day, I will talk to you about the joys of Amazon's "Subscribe & Save" program and my new-found love for Audible.

Some day, I will talk to you about how amazing the Amazon app is and the fact that I have a dream to sell a children's book I wrote on Amazon someday.
But not today.

Today I'd like to share some of my favorite completely reasonably-priced "farmhouse finds" that I have purchased or are planning to purchase from Amazon...all under $20!

Some of my favorite items that I've purchased for the farmhouse have been simple signs, rustic baskets, or metal accents.
Picture
Amazon has a host of items that fit my taste...and my budget.

As you've probably seen in some of my other posts, I love signs and wall-hangings to fill the walls of the farmhouse.

Amazon has a nice selection of high-quality signs.
I love this cutesy little "Home Rules" chalkboard to lean up somewhere on a counter or hang in a little open place beside the bathroom mirror.

It's a great reminder of some of our "family rules" we talk about daily!

It starts with "Always be honest" and ends with "Love one another".

Yes, yes, yes!

This $10.95 Amazing Grace sign is perfectly rustic-y and primitive.

It's hard to tell in the picture, but you can barely see an outline of the sheet music behind the main text.

At 5" x 10", it's the perfect size to round out a farmhouse wall gallery.

What a great reminder of His amazing grace.
I just think this vintage Soap & Water sign is adorable.

In fact, I just bought one for the girls' new bathroom wall.

I also picked up this deer antler jewelry-holder for the girls' new bathroom, too.

I can't believe they are old enough to need a jewelry-holder!
I have tried to be very intentional with the items I bring into the farmhouse, since we moved in last July.

One of the things I try to think about when I purchase items is the functional purpose that they could serve in our home.

These containers are perfect for organizing AND looking adorable.
A nice warm throw is always a good item to have lying over a chair, reading available for snuggling up with a good book.  I also love the natural pop of color that this wreath brings.
There are hundreds of thousands of items to choose from and purchase on Amazon.

These are just a few of my favorites.

I would encourage you to think about the purpose of the items you bring into your home before you purchase.
Seek out items that bring joy to your heart and make your home feel peace and calming to you.

Be responsible in your spending and intentional in what you allow into your home.

And enjoy the process!

Happy Friday from the Farmhouse, friends!

six months.

January 9th marked our six-month anniversary of our "first night sleeping at the farmhouse".

Six months.

In some ways, it feels like that was ages ago...and in some ways, it feels like yesterday.

Over the snow days (and ice day and really cold wind-chill day) that we had off of school last week, I really reminisced about our time here at the farmhouse so far.

I started looking through some of my old blog posts and Instagram photos.

One of my most favorite memories for the rest of my life will be from 9:00 at night on the first Saturday night that we slept here.

Our minister and his wife came out and prayed over the farmhouse.  You can read about it in my blog post from that day...Bless this Mess.

Since that warm July night,
we have enjoyed family movie nights cuddled in the living room,
mornings on the front porch reading our books,
pick-up games of basketball out to the north of the house,
friends over to BBQ,
softball practice out in the yard,
and for Thanksgiving we hosted our first TWO family dinners out here.

We experienced our first farmhouse Christmas with the girls.

We have painted and decorated,
Added an upstairs bathroom,
Tore down a barn,
Added a chicken coop,
Purged belongings,
Purchased furniture.

It has been quite the journey and I know we are nowhere near "finished".
Somedays (most days), we are a mess. But we are thankful to God that he's able to bless this mess.

Thanks for following along with us over the last six months.

I hope you'll stick around for the next six months.

almost a second bathroom.

1/16/2018

Mr. Farmhouse has been working tirelessly in all of his spare time to get the girls a second bathroom.

We paid a buddy of ours to do the rough-in work and plumbing (thanks, Brent!), but Mr. Farmhouse decided he could finish the rest out himself.

With lots of help from our dads, we have finished the sheetrock, cement board for the tile, and wiring.

Next up is paint,
then putting in the vanity & sink,
finishing the accent wall with barn wood & metal from the barn that is lying beside our house,
the tile work,
and installing the toilet & plumbing fixtures.
It actually seems like a really long list now that I've typed it all out.

However, when we first moved in, it felt like it would take years for that old barn to come down.

And look at it now.

Ready to be dismantled and reused to make way for the new shop.
Picture
Picture
We started with an open canvas for the upstairs bath.

With hard work (and the help of friends and family), Mr. Farmhouse is transforming it into the second bathroom we've been dreaming of since we moved into our first home almost fifteen years ago.

I'm working hard in 2018 to be intentional with my time,
to appreciate the small things,
and to show my gratitude to God daily for all He has blessed me with.

On this cold and snowy day, I am sitting here by the window feeling content.

Content with the process.

Content on this journey.

Just content.

Sending warm hugs from the Farmhouse on this beautiful day, friends.

love language: receiving gifts.

1/14/2018

A few years ago, I read a book by Dr. Gary Chapman, entitled The 5 Love Languages.

In his book about the secret to love that lasts, Dr. Chapman talks about the five love languages that we as humans are wired to give and respond to.
  • Words of Affirmation
  • Quality Time
  • Receiving Gifts
  • Acts of Service
  • Physical Touch
The book is basically an introduction to the five love languages and ways to tune into your spouse's love languages to love him or her better.

The profile assessment that you can take to learn about your love language overwhelmingly confirmed that my number one love language is acts of service.

I like to do.

To serve.

To fix.

Mr. Farmhouse's languages, however, are quality time and physical touch.

Of course.

Opposites attract, right?

So over time, I have started to become more intentional with my time spent with Mr. Farmhouse and the girls.

I'm working on "speaking his love language" more, to strengthen our marriage and to be a good example to our children.

One of my lifelong bestie's main love languages is gifting.

She is so thoughtful.

She thinks of gifts months in advance.

She is always on the look-out for a good gift that the people in her life would "just love".

My mom is the same way.

I'm more of a "grab a gift card at Dollar General twelve minutes before the party" kind of girl, myself.  (Anyone else?)

However, the farmhouse has been a great opportunity for me to appreciate the thoughtfulness behind those who have the "gift of gift".

A post shared by Hannah Newkirk (@farmhouse654) on Aug 22, 2017 at 12:17pm PDT

So many times over the last six months, I have had a knock at the door or a package on the front porch that included a small token of love to celebrate our new home.

As you know, a gift isn't just an object.

It's not just "stuff".

It's someone taking time out of his or her day and saying, "Here...take this.  I wanted to bless you and your family in a small way because I care for you."
What a humbling experience it has been to have our friends and family wrap us up during the (somewhat lengthly) transition we made from our familiar home of eleven years to our dear farmhouse.

God has been teaching me a lot about quality time and the importance of physical touch over the last few years.

He's been teaching me about the importance of sacrificing my comfort and agenda and how to work more on putting other people before myself...mainly my dear husband.

And now...He is teaching me about showing love through giving gifts.

I'm trying hard to look deep into those I love to find out more about the love languages that speak most clearly to them.

I'm a work in progress.

target clearance.

8/26/2017

Let's be real.

I have made MANY impulse purchases of items from Target that happen to be clearanced.

Usually, those little clearance tags with the red outline call to me from the aisles.

"Look at this amazing throw pillow that needs to be on my couch!"

"Ooooo...an aqua- and coral-colored organizational basket!"

"Matching clothes for the girls!"
This time, though...the clearance called me from my email.

When I saw this cute little cabinet come up on my computer screen.

The one on my computer was actually red...and it was adorable.  I thought it would fit perfectly in my teal & red farmhouse kitchen.

But it was $120...even on sale.  Mr. Banana Split Yellow cabinet was a nice $89.
Picture
So I made my first ONLINE clearance impulse purchase at Target.com.

It came in a nice big box and sat in the living room for a few days.

Then one night, Mr. Farmhouse got home early from checking cows and I said, "Hey, can you do me a favor?"

"Sure."

"Can you put something together for me?"

(sigh) "What's that?"

And in that moment, I revealed my amazing clearance purchase of this adorable yellow cabinet for the kitchen.

Mr. Farmhouse was not impressed.

In fact, I think "the ugliest color of yellow I've ever seen" was inserted somewhere in the conversation.

But he loves me.
Picture
And so...he put it together.

And moved it into the kitchen for me.

And then he seemed to have an opinion about where the "ugliest color of yellow" cutesy shelf should be placed in the kitchen.

He thought it should be flat along the wall, about two inches over the trim.

I thought it should be placed at an angle to make it look more centered.
So I took it to the Facebook world and posted it on the Farmhouse654 Facebook page.

By an overwhelming majority, the "angled" folks won.

Although the "what if stuff falls behind the cabinet?" folks did have a good point.

However, just like we have been very intentional about the space on top of the coffee bar, we will be intentional about this space too.
Picture
The top of the yellow cabinet will be used for our bread basket and a box of Kleenex.

That's it.

I used a few more $6.00 Dollar General baskets in the bottom of the cabinet for some small appliances, like my blender & mixer.

I'll add another one of those baskets to the top shelf in-between my favorite cookbooks and my favorite coffee mugs for potatoes and that will be all!

It's visible, yet organized.

Functional, yet stylish.

Banana Split Yellow, yet adorable.

groupings.

Growing up, I collected keychains.

I would grab a keychain on any family trip we took or even something that seemed interesting to me on a shopping trip.

Family members even started buying me keychains and bringing them home for me when they traveled.

For several years, I looked through the keychains and remembered some fun times with family.

And then one day, I stopped.

They just weren't that enjoyable anymore and they ended up in a big metal coffee can, where they lived until I eventually threw them all away when we moved to the home my parents live in now.

At that point in life, the keychain collection just didn't MEAN anything to me.

In the end of my high school years, Willow Tree angels were just coming out and I loved them.

Do you know the ones I'm talking about?

Beautiful, creamy-colored angels that were were replicas of Susan Lordi's hand-carved angels.

My parents started getting me an angel for big life events...my 16th birthday, high school graduation, holidays.

And I loved them.

Each angel represented a time in life that was important and special to me.

At first, I housed these angels altogether on top of my piano.

Until there were too many.

Then I split them up and put half on the piano and half in my Great-Great-Grandma Hannah's antique secretary that sits in our home.

They were fine there, but I just felt like nobody ever really saw them.

It felt like they were kind of thrown out there much like the keychain collection of yesteryear.

Like when people looked at my house, at my angels, it was hard to appreciate each angel for what it was...a representation of a very specific moment in life.

I had an angel from the day I became a teacher...the day I lost my grandpa...the day we found out we were expecting a baby.

I had an angel that represented my relationship with my parents, Mr. Farmhouse, and each of the girls.

These were reminders of monumental occasions and my most cherished relationships...and they were collecting dust instead, seemingly unloved and unappreciated.

Until I began to decorate using what I call "groupings".
Picture
I would take important pictures or meaningful angels and I would put them together.

You can see in this picture that our pictures with our siblings are grouped with the angels that represent these brother-sister relationships.  Gerold & I are the angel pair on the left and Matthew & Ashley on the right.
The primitive framed print of Proverbs 22:6 was a purchase several years ago in a flea market with my mother-in-law on vacation.  I cling to this verse daily in raising the girls.

Again, for years, it sat on a shelf somewhere in the house, unnoticed and just blending in during day-to-day life.

When I began grouping my decor, I paired the framed scripture with these two angels...Matthew & the two older girls along with Mattie & I.

Now, it makes a statement.
Picture
Picture
I'm still waiting on five pictures from the photo lab for this grouping. Can you tell where they will go?

The two metal prints on the left and the larger framed print on the right are John Deere pictures.

John Deere runs deep into both sides of our family history.

Mr. Farmhouse and I have both lost our grandpas in the last eight years and they were both John Deere men.

I have a picture of each of them with their tractors getting printed to be hung on this wall, as well as pictures of the girls in their Key overalls.

(Sidenote: Having the DVDs on display like that just about makes me crazy. Still trying to find a way to hide them that won't cost a fortune.)
Pictured above:
(top left, represents the stages of our life - marriage, pregnancy, baby, toddler, big girl)
(top right, in my office - my praying & praising angels, my "create" sign)
(bottom left, education - the two books on the left were Matthew's great-grandparents', my reading and teaching angels, and a primitive framed alphabet from my in-laws when I became a teacher)
(bottom right, give thanks...Matthew & I with the girls, displayed in the gathering room)

I love having all of my favorite things on display in the farmhouse.

All of our reminders of our favorite memories, our favorite people, and those big moments in life that have molded us into who we are now.

Decorating with groupings has helped to make this happen. ❤️🏡❤️

room reveal: gathering room

7/21/2017

In the old house, we didn't have a dining room. We had an eat-in breakfast nook that could seat all five of us if we moved the table out from the wall enough to fit one of the girls there.

It has worked perfectly fine for us, but one of the things that was really exciting to me about the farmhouse is that there will be a separate dining room for us to spend time in, eating as a family or entertaining.

Of course, the farmhouse table I bought on Craigslist was the perfect focal point for the gathering room.

I also found these chairs on www.target.com, but they were unavailable online.
Picture
The girls and I decided one night to head to our nearest Target a week or so before we closed on the farmhouse and see if we could find any of them.

We went to Target and found three, so I bought them.  The sweet gal working the customer service desk pointed us in the direction of four other Targets in the area that had some of these chairs in stock.

It was already getting close to bedtime for little girls, so my mom and one of her BFFs decided to adventure out for us and find these chairs!

They went to four different Targets and found five more chairs...in the pouring rain...until 11:00 at night.  They love me.
We decided that Mr. Farmhouse's grandma's China cabinet would fit nicely in the gathering room, but instead of filling it with his great-grandma's dishes that we had been storing at the old house, we decided to use those dishes!

The beautiful dishes his great-grandma had left us had been sitting in the China cabinet for ten years, collecting dust.  They are beautiful and special and we decided that there is no reason to keep them there taking up space and not being lovingly used by our family!

And now, it has all come together.
Picture
The farmhouse table and chairs make a stunning centerpiece.

The China cabinet is now a display case and will be admired and enjoyed, instead of overlooked.

The piano now has a home in a room away from the hustle & bustle of the main living room.

The dining room leads directly into my office nook, which I'll be working on this week.  I also have plans to build a sliding barn door to close off the laundry room when needed.

I'm still missing a few prints of the kids to put on the wall and need to hang this cool old window I found from a friend's garage sale.

But for now...it's beautiful.  I could not love it more.

furniture love.

Today, the front door of the farmhouse opened and two high school kids were standing there with a buffet that has been sitting in my parents' dining room for the last several years.
Picture
Mom had purchased the buffet from an estate sale about four years ago.

She had told me last week sometime that she thought it would go well in the farmhouse dining room, since it had sat in that exact same spot for several years before.

That's right...this buffet belonged to the family who lived here from 1971-2013.

I love the character and story that a piece  of furniture like this tells.
Earlier this morning, before the buffet was delivered, this old pie safe was dropped off at my house.

This one belonged to an older man that lived out by my grandparents' farm for over fifty years.  He recently passed away and his son & daughter-in-law contacted us to see if we would be interested in any furniture.

I feel like this piece was just made for this wall in my gathering room.
I had a little 3-drawer chest dresser there before this and it was just "okay".  I mean, it was fine there, but nothing that I would say I absolutely loved.  I just didn't have anything better for the space.

But THIS.

This was exactly what I was looking for.

I love how the inserts on the cabinet doors with the star cutouts complement the wall color.

I love how there is a drawer and two more lower cabinets for storage.

I love that "HOME" from Dollar General looks like it really fits there.

I love that it came from a family we know and love.

I love everything about both pieces.

They were exactly what I was looking for.

Today, I made lots of progress.

I emptied lots of tubs.

Put lots of things away.

Welcomed these two "new to me" pieces of furniture into our home.

We even had some friends over tonight to join in with our chaos.

I've got two weeks until we were planning to take a lake mini-vacation.

I think I'm on track to be finished by then.

I think I can, I think I can...

room reveal: farmhouse bathroom

7/12/2017

I finally (almost) finished a room today.

The farmhouse bathroom is now (almost) complete.

I need to hang a picture of the girls and maybe a few other signs, but for the most part, it is how I want it.

So here it comes.

The very first "room reveal" for the farmhouse.

Try to remember that I had some "help" from a certain 3-year-old while taking the photos.
Picture
Right now, there is only one bathroom in the farmhouse.

We are going to be adding a second bathroom upstairs in the next month or so, but for now...this is it.

It's a pretty large bathroom for being such an old house.

This built-in storage closet is great.  I decided not to put a curtain or anything up, so I wanted the shelves to be somewhat uniform.

I ended up getting some brown plastic woven baskets and these Sterilite 3-drawer units to add some organization to the closet.  They look pretty sharp, if I do say so myself.

The antique dry-sink that sits right outside the closet area is something I purchased when we first got married from some good friends of ours.  It is housing our bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths.

(Sidenote: I was going to try to hide the blow dryer and straightener basket, but let's be honest...I will actually put it away if it is organized in plain sight!)

The rustic chair was a $1.00 garage sale find several years ago.  I like how it fit so nicely in the corner, without blocking the air vent.

You can see that the tile work in the bathroom is beautiful.  It had been remodeled by the sellers and we absolutely love it.  The tub is the original cast-iron and the tile work goes from the top of the bathtub to the ceiling in the tub area.

Right inside the bathroom door is a little post-office type shelf that I purchased at least 14 years ago, before we got married.

It has been used in lots of different rooms in both of our former homes.

This is perhaps my favorite set up for it.  It is housing all of my essential oils.

(Sidenote: I'm not a purchaser of DoTerra or Young Living or any other oil company, so please don't try to sell me some other kind or judge my use of these.  These are oils that have come in my Melaleuca kits over the last year.  I don't rub them on my children or ingest them, so no worries.  I have contacts if I decide to dive in!)

But seriously...how adorable is my little post-office box oil display???

To the left of the closet is the shower, sink, and toilet.

The sellers had a custom-made towel rack and toilet paper holder in the bathroom.  They wanted to take it with them and of course, we said yes!

I found a brushed bronze toilet paper holder to match the other plumbing fixtures that would fit exactly into the current holes in the tile.

I wanted to build a towel rack out of iron plumbing pipe, but decided to look at Amazon just in case.

I love Amazon Prime.

Sure enough, I found this toilet paper holder that I thought would be PERFECT as a hand towel rack!

I hung it up today and voilá!

It's exactly what I pictured!

(Sidenote: The hand towel is definitely not pressed and pristine.  Once again...real life here, people.  It had just been used and this is how it landed.  It is what it is!)

We have been staying here now for five days.

Today, I noticed something exciting.

We have a medicine cabinet behind the mirror.

Yeah, seriously.

I had no idea.

Little surprises every day at Farmhouse654!
